Yard Waste Collection Changes

RE: Previously Published Yard Waste Collection Changes (2/2/17)

Previously announced changes that were initiated by Fairfax County
regarding a ban on the use of yard waste collection in plastic bags has
been PUT ON HOLD by American Disposal Services, the Conservancy’s trash
contractor. Please disregard prior notices announcing a March 1st change
until further notice. Please contact the Conservancy office with any
questions. Also visit

Yard waste removal changes will take effect on March 1, 2017. Please note, material placed in plastic bags will be rejected at the local yard waste composting facilities. ADS has been informed that plastic bags of any kind require additional processing and render the finished compost less attractive. Therefore, the current collection policy must be modified to avoid additional costs that would be necessary to accept material in plastic bags.

Yard waste will be accepted in compostable paper yard waste bags or personal containers clearly marked, "Yard Debris Material". The paper yard waste bags can be found at local grocery stores, hardware stores, and through online retailers. Beginning March 1, 2017, ADS will no longer accept yard waste material in PLASTIC bags.

Please consider mulching your material when possible. Your cooperation is appreciated! ADS may be contacted during their office hours: M-F, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM. Phone: 703-368-0500
